Overcome Gum Disease with Non-surgical Yet Effective Periodontal Deep Cleaning

Periodontal Deep Cleaning

If you are consistent with your oral hygiene, part of your dental care is getting standard teeth cleanings every six months. However, if you have slacked your oral hygiene and gum disease has sneaked into your smile, you may need more than standard dental cleaning (prophylaxis). For such cases, expert dentist recommends deep teeth cleaning (scaling and root planing) to eliminate harmful bacteria and dental calculus from the pockets between teeth and gums.

What is deep teeth cleaning?

Also known as periodontal cleaning, deep dental cleaning is a two-barreled treatment that targets tartar and bacteria stuck in the deep periodontal pockets. Through scaling, the dentist uses a special tool to scrape off dental calculus from the spaces between teeth and gums. Then, the dentist smoothens the tooth roots through root planing to promote healing by allowing gums to reattach to the teeth.

Scaling and root planing are incredible in managing the progression of gum disease. These procedures cure diseased gums and protect teeth by removing harmful bacteria that can damage teeth-supporting structures.

Is scaling and root planing (SRP) painful?

A periodontal deep cleaning is like a standard cleaning but more intensive. This treatment usually takes two appointments, but more visits may be required for severe cases. The procedure isn’t painful because we precisely numb your mouth with injectable anesthetics to neutralize pain or discomfort.

After treatment, your gums will be sore and tender. Your teeth may also be sensitive. During this period, we’ll recommend pain medications to manage discomfort. We’ll also recommend home remedies like avoiding hot or cold foods and drinks for a few days to hasten recovery.

Benefits of deep teeth cleaning

Mild gum infection can be reversed with diligent oral hygiene, but moderate periodontal disease requires further intervention. Periodontal teeth cleaning presents a viable option to overcome gum disease without surgery.
